A Blueprint for Public Renewable Energy and Community-First Engineering

Our multi-system energy upgrade at St Nicholas Park Leisure Centre on Banbury Road, Warwick, stands as a premier showcase of public sustainability, proving that integrating clean, self-generated power into major community hubs is both highly achievable and immensely impactful. Delivered in close partnership with Warwick District Council, this project serves as a textbook example of how to integrate complex, modern renewable energy technology and fabric improvements into existing public infrastructure without disrupting the community.

The industry took notice in a massive way. The project was officially crowned the winner of the Solar Roofing Award at the prestigious NFRC UK Roofing Awards 2026, celebrating our outstanding collaborative delivery alongside Stace Roofing, SIG Building Solutions, and Solfit. Adding to this success, the scheme’s progressive engineering and tangible community focus have also earned it a spot on the official shortlist for the Social Infrastructure Project Award at the British Construction & Infrastructure Awards (BCIA) 2026.

Solar Engineering Over Live Roofs

  • The Sports Hall Roof (Phase 1): Rather than a traditional, disruptive full roof replacement, the team carried out a highly efficient over-cladding operation on the sports hall roof. Using the Gemello® Revive overclad roofing system, we integrated 126 Solfit 425W in-roof solar panels directly into the structure. This created a single, seamless, and completely weather-tight surface that dual-functions as both the building’s protective skin and its power generator.
  • The Swimming Pool Roof (Phase 2): The pool roof required a completely different, highly technical approach. First, the team had to block up old, redundant skylights, lay down fireboarding, and apply a fresh, high-performance bituminous roof covering. On top of this prepared surface, we installed a ballasted array of 177 EX-500M (500W) solar panels. Because we could not penetrate the pool roof, we used a non-invasive K2 BasicRail Ballast System to secure the array safely against high winds.
  • Intelligent Inverter Setup: To manage the substantial power load and ensure maximum efficiency, we configured a bank of five SolarEdge inverters (three SE90K-Delta-Grid-Units and two SE50K units). This layout ensures that if one section of the array experiences shade, the rest of the system continues to generate power at peak performance.

Expected Performance & Environmental Impact

Commissioned on 5 June 2026, the system is already delivering immediate, measurable results for both Warwick District Council’s energy independence and its green targets:

  • Annual PV Generation: The system is on track to generate an estimated 133,237 kWh of clean electricity every single year.
  • On-Site Self-Consumption: St Nicks will directly consume 98,423 kWh of that generated power on-site. This single upgrade now self-supplies 26.5% of the entire leisure centre’s electricity demands.
  • Grid Export: During peak summer hours when generation outstrips the building’s needs, the system will feed approximately 34,813 kWh back into the local grid, supporting the wider community with clean energy.
  • Carbon Reduction: By shifting away from grid dependency for its electricity, the project prevents 62,571 kg (roughly 62.5 tonnes) of CO₂ from entering the atmosphere every single year.
